Fathimath Shifana has been in active law practice since 2006 while working with the Ministry of Finance. She has been with the firm since its inception in 2014. She was a member of the first Employment Tribunal set up in Maldives. Shifana has advised and represented clients in commercial matters, foreign investment, international shipping, employment, insurance, family disputes, land matters, resort management contracts, lease agreements, construction agreements and other civil matters. Shifana has years of experience in legislative drafting and conducting translation work. She has over 19 years of experience in legal practice and is licensed to appear before in all courts of the Maldives.

Shifana holds a Master of Comparative Laws degree (2006) and an LLB (Honours) degree (2005) from International Islamic University Malaysia and a Diploma in Management from the University of Wollongong (2001). She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and is listed as a secondary arbitrator with the Maldives International Arbitration Center.

Notable Matters:

  • Represented a major local public company in respect of financing the acquisition of a specialized vessel.
  • Represented a state-owned enterprise in a dispute between a foreign company, relating to a major construction contract.
  • Represented a major local insurance company in successfully defending one of the largest insurance claims relating to a tourist resort.
  • Represented the owner of a major local newspaper in successfully reviewing and reversing an earlier decision of the Supreme Court relating to ownership of that newspaper.
